FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT TYPE OF MIX DO YOU USE?

For all exterior flatwork we use air entrained six bag mix. Every cubic yard of concrete will contain six bags of portland cement. It can withstand cold weather better than five bag mix. Five bag mix is satifactory for footings and indoor use such as basement floors.

WHAT TYPE OF BASE DO YOU USE?
We use 21A recycled concrete or sand. We prefer 21A. It is readily available. It compacts well and doesn't  erode over time. The base will be compacted with a vibrating gas compactor.

WILL YOU NOTIFY US BEFORE YOU START THE WORK?
Under no circumstances do we begin work without notification. We can give an approximate time, in how many days or weeks before work is to begin and then notify the homeowner a day or two in advance of the starting date. Other arrangements for notification can be made.

WILL YOU BACK ANY HEAVY EQUIPMENT OVER MY SIDEWALK OR EXISTING DRIVEWAY?
No. We have power buggies(motorized wheel barrels) and all the proper equipment necessary to perform the work without doing damage. If any damage occurs we will take full responsibility.

ARE YOU INSURED?
We are fully insured and bonded. We have full liability insurance and all our employees are covered under workmans comp. The homeowner will not be held responsible for any damage or injury that may occur.

DO WE NEED TO PAY ANY MONEY UP FRONT?

No payment is necessary until all work is completed?

IS RE-INFORCEMENT NECESSARY?

Using re-inforcement, such as Fibermesh, wiremesh or re-rods does help. It increases the tensile strength of concrete, however it does not guarantee the slab will not crack. Another option is to make the new concrete thicker, five or six inches thick, instead of four. Extra thickness also increases tensile strength and compression strength as well.

WHAT IS FIBERMESH?
Fibermesh is made of tiny hair like fibers that are added and mixed in the concrete at the plant. Fibermesh serves the same purpose as wiremesh with added benefits at a lower cost. A brochure is available upon request.

WILL YOU PLACE EXPANSION PAPER AGAINST THE HOUSE?

Expansion paper will be placed against the house, garage, any structures and at existing slabs. Control joints in driveways will be cut with a concrete saw after the concrete hardens.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO DO THE WORK?

Most patios can be done in a day or less. Most driveways take one or two days. Large driveways may take longer. Inspections, rainy weather or chance of rain can delay the work.

WILL A PERMIT BE REQUIRED AND WHO GETS THE PERMIT?

The rules vary depending on where you live. All communities require a permit for all work done on city property. Some require a permit even if the work is done on private property. We will pull any and all required permits.

WILL YOU REMOVE EXCESS DIRT AND BROKEN CONCRETE.
All excess dirt and/or  broken concrete will be removed. We will cut out three or four inches of sod or dirt to set our forms. This dirt and/or sod will be left and then put back, after we remove the forms. The homeowner is responsible for putting back dirt and/or sod unless other arrangements are made.

HOW LONG DO WE HAVE TO STAY OFF THE NEW CONCRETE?

We recommend not to drive on it for a week and not to walk on it until the following day.

IS SEALER NECESSARY?
We recommend it. It protects the surface of the concrete. It can be applied with a garden sprayer, brush or roller. It can be purchased at most building supply stores or from our concrete supplier.

SHOULD WEE KEEP THE CONCRETE WET AFTER YOU POUR.

In warm temperature above 70 degrees and above and especially in very warm temperatures above 80 degrees, we recommend that it be kept wet as much as possible for a minimum of three days.

HOW DO YOU WANT TO GET PAID?

We accept personal checks, money orders, cashiers checks, or cash.
